Losses in bended optical fibers

Abstract
In the process of manufacturing an optical cable, the fibers undergo various deformations. One of the most important types of deformation is the macro-bend of the fibers. In the article, measurements of the linear attenuation of the optical fiber at various values of the bending radius in the transmission windows of 1310 nm and 1550 nm were carried out. Measurements were made with an optical power and an attenuation meter and an optical reflectometer as well. The experimental results show that the attenuation on bending increases with the optical wavelength of the radiation, therefore, the minimum value of the bending radius, at which the bending damping is zero, must be determined separately for the each wavelength.
